This listserve is for people interested in the study and conservation of Hawaii's anchialine ponds and habitats. Technically, anchialine environments are characterized as "bodies of haline waters, usually with restricted exposure to air, always with extensive subterranean connections to the sea, and showing noticeable marine and terrestrial influences". The Hawaiian Archipelago has the largest concentration of anchialine environments in the world and are home to diverse assemblages of microorganisms as well as a macrofauna dominated by endemic gastropod mollusks and crustaceans. Unfortunately, many of these habitats have been lost (and those remaining are threatened) by various anthropogenic impacts and the introduction of invasive species.
